This series evolved through experimentation as one thing led to another. A variety of materials were used starting with burning holes and edges with incense sticks into two different weights of Tissuetex and mull (used in bookbinding) which were then layered in different ways(1, 2 and 3). I stitched red and grey knots into the holes of no.4 that represent the the hot and burnt-to-ash ends of the incense stick. I moved on to heavier papers, cartridge and Khadi papers which needed a soldering iron to burn through. 6,7 and 8 have underlays.
In 13, 14 and 16 carbon paper was used for the marks made by quickly hitting the back of it with a soldering iron which meant I was working blind. 17 is the most complex image with an underlay, an overlay of of a rubbing on Tissuetex from the holes left on carbon paper giving a smoky effect and also some ink stained paper. 19, a smaller image, combines a burn drawing directly onto paper overlayed with brnt tracing paper and mull.
